Richard Smart is currently the Polemarch of the Southfield Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. He was initiated into the fraternity on April 14, 1978 at the University of Michigan (Sigma Chapter) and has served in many leadership positions within the fraternity. He has served as the Guide Right Chairman and Kappa League Advisor of the  award-winning Kappa Leadership League program in the Northern Province. He has been elected and served as Keeper of Records and Vice Polemarch of his Chapter.

In his professional life, Richard has served as an attorney in the Michigan Attorney General's office and many years in private practice. He also served the community as a jurist with the Wayne County juvenile court where he sat on the bench for 17 years. Later, he took a position as the Deputy Court Administrator of the Wayne County Juvenile Court. He retired from his professional career to spend more time with his passion, philanthropy. In addition to being Polemarch of the Southfield Alumni Chapter, he serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors with Brilliant Detroit.  Today, he provides best practices consulting to courts around the country.

Richard has served on the Southfield Kappa Foundation Board of Directors since 2024.
